The man who became his partner, Jacques Genet, finally took over half the estate in 1985, then bought the whole of it in 1997, leaving Charles Joguet to return to his original passion: painting/sculpting. In 2006, his daughter Anne-Charlotte Genet and a partner Kevin Fontaine joined the estate, which then sold 6 hectares of vines on sandy soils to acquire the same 6 hectares, but on a higher-quality limestone-clay terroir. The Charles Joguet estate is at the very top of the Chinon appellation, and its level of excellence is based above all on 3 huge vintages that have ensured the estate's continued success: Clos de la Dioterie (2 hectares of 80-year-old vines on clay-limestone soils, facing north-east, located in Sazilly), Clos du Chêne Vert (2 hectares located in the town of Chinon), and Les Varennes du Grand Clos (4.5 hectares in Sazilly). These high-potential terroirs give the Charles Joguet estate an enviable position, but the quality of the wines is remarkable, given the size of the estate. Well done to the team in charge of vinification and the vines, who have succeeded in promoting a spirit of freshness in great Cabernet Franc wines, which offer Chinon marvellous fruity and floral aromas, ranging from wild strawberries, raspberries and redcurrants to violets, wallflowers and peonies, and in the great wines for laying down, a unique aromatic palette of truffles, undergrowth and musk. From sandy soils to clay-limestone terroirs, no fewer than 7 plot-based cuvées are produced each year in Cabernet Franc and a white Chinon, Clos de la Plante Martin (Chenin accounts for only 3% of the Chinon AOC). So it's a taste journey through the different climates, from fruity wines to be enjoyed young (the red Chinon cuvées: Silènes, Les Petites Roches, La Cure and Les Charmes), to the great wines for laying down that are the estate's 3 flagship red Chinon cuvées: Les Varennes du Grand Clos, Clos du Chêne Vert, and Clos de la Dioterie. The final cuvée, Clos Monplaisir, comes from a parcel of vines planted in 1979, with yields limited to around 20 hectolitres per hectare, south-facing and overlooking the Vienne. This is a wine that can be laid down for a very long time, and will come into its own after 15 years in great vintages. Charles Joguet's red Loire wines are highly sought-after.
