Domaine Richard Leroy, a legendary Anjou estate, is located in Rablay-sur-Layon in the Loire, and has less than 3 hectares divided between 2 parcels: Les Noëls de Montbenault covers 2 hectares on the upper slopes of the Coteaux du Layon, where the soil is shallow and full of rhyolite volcanic rock. The parcel faces due south and is situated in a windy spot, which is particularly useful for drying the grapes throughout the year and avoiding disease. Clos des Rouliers, on the other hand, covers 0.70 hectares and lies at the bottom of the hillside. The soil type is much the same, but there is less wind. Richard Leroy immediately sensed that his terroirs had nothing to envy the great local appellations.

From the outset, chemicals were banned, the vines were ploughed and Richard Leroy carried out a great deal of manual work. At the outset, Richard Leroy thought he was producing sweet wines, but as the use of sulphur was compulsory in sweet wines (to prevent re-fermentation in the bottle), he decided to test dry Chenin wines by selecting the best from his vines. In 2008, Richard Leroy decided to downgrade his cuvées to vins de France, voluntarily leaving the appellation, fed up with the never-ending wars over approvals and administrative authorisations. Year after year, Richard Leroy's wines have become increasingly popular, and in 2011 they even became legendary, as Richard Leroy became the model winemaker for a comic strip by Etienne Davodeau: 'Les Ignorants'. Reputed to be one of the finest Loire whites, Les Noëls de Montbenault is made from fifty-year-old chenins planted in the volcanic soils of Faye d'Anjou and grown using non-certified biodynamic methods. The wine is aged in new oak for 18 months, with little or no sulphur added at bottling, depending on the vintage.  The nose is a veritable festival of aromas including fresh quince, preserved lemon, popcorn and subtle infusion notes. On the palate, the acidity, fat and alcohol are harmoniously balanced, and the finish is exceptionally long. Such a wine can often thrill, but alas, quantities are particularly limited. Clos des Rouliers has notes of almond, quince and honey, and needs to be aired to develop its full potential. It has a crystalline balance and intense salinity, prolonged by delicate, salivating bitters.  Richard Leroy's wines offer the very best of their terroir, and by expressing themselves with class, minerality, salinity and uprightness, he is truly a great winemaker.
