History of Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret

The history of Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret dates back to 1620 when the Mongeard family settled in Vosne-Romanée, in the heart of viticultural Burgundy. For more than eight generations, this family expertise has been patiently transmitted, enriched, and perfected. It wasn't until 1945 that the estate officially took its current name when Eugène Mongeard and his wife Edmée Mugneret united their heritage and expertise to create an estate whose reputation continues to grow.

Vincent Mongeard, the current owner, perpetuates this tradition with passion and dedication, overseeing every step of production, from the vineyard to the cellar. Under his direction, the estate now spans 30 hectares, with 35 appellations covering some of the most prestigious terroirs in Burgundy, notably Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Echezeaux, and Richebourg.

The estate has forged a solid reputation, particularly for its consistency year after year. Far from relying on "great vintages", the Mongeard family aims for exemplary regularity. The estate takes pride in producing accessible wines, meeting a growing demand for vintages that can be enjoyed young, while maintaining excellent ageing potential for those who wish to cellar them.

Terroirs and Vineyards of the Estate Mongeard-Mugneret

Terroir is the very essence of Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret's wines. Located between the majestic Château du Clos de Vougeot and the town of Nuits-Saint-Georges, in Vosne-Romanée, the estate benefits from a strategic position on exceptional terroirs. The plots, planted on mid-slopes, enjoy an ideal south-east orientation, offering the vines optimal sunlight for slow and regular ripening of the grapes. The soils are primarily clay-limestone, a typical terroir of the Côte de Nuits, renowned for producing wines that are both fine and complex.

The 30 hectares of vines, with an average age of 40 years, are cultivated with care, according to the principles of sustainable viticulture. The estate doesn't buy any grapes and is entirely dedicated to the production of its own plots. Pinot Noir reigns supreme for red wines, bringing finesse and depth, while Chardonnay and Aligoté are used for white wines, offering freshness and minerality.

Meticulous care of the vines includes rigorous pruning, green harvesting to regulate yields, and constant attention to grape quality. Each step is performed manually, ensuring that only the best fruits are harvested for the production of exceptional wines.

Vinification at Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret

At Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret, vinification is an art mastered with precision. Each cuvée is carefully vinified according to the characteristics of the appellation and vintage. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, ensuring strict control of temperature for optimal extraction of aromas and tannins. Cold maceration, which often precedes fermentation, allows for gentle extraction of phenolic compounds, ensuring a beautiful colour and aromatic complexity.

Alcoholic fermentation typically lasts 12 to 15 days, depending on the vintage. Once this stage is complete, gentle pressing is carried out with a pneumatic press, which preserves the wine's finesse by avoiding overly intense tannin extraction. The wines are then moved to the cellar by gravity and aged in oak barrels for 18 to 22 months, depending on the cuvée.

The barrels, made from oak sourced from Allier and Nièvre, bring roundness and subtlety to the wine during ageing. A portion of the barrels used is new, while the percentage of new wood varies according to the vintage and appellation to avoid over-concentration of woody aromas. Ageing is followed by bottling without filtration to preserve the wine's authenticity and aromatic richness. The estate thus guarantees consistent and impeccable quality for each vintage.
