Founded in 1720 under the name C.Marey, the estate has remained in the same family since its origins. Claude Marey, the King's secretary and mayor of Nuits-Saint-Georges, established this trading house to market the great wines of the region. In 1852, the estate took on a new dimension when Guillaume Félix Marey partnered with his son-in-law, Count Louis Liger-Belair, giving birth to the entity C.Marey and Comte Liger-Belair.
This partnership propelled the estate to the top of the great Burgundian houses, but it experienced a decline after the sale of the company in 1982 by Xavier Liger-Belair. It was Vincent Liger-Belair, his son, who breathed new life into this heritage by repurchasing the buildings and restructuring the vineyards. The decisive turning point came in 2001, when Thibault Liger-Belair, passionate about viticulture, took over the family estate. He restructured the operation and adopted organic, then biodynamic, agricultural practices, giving the estate a dazzling renewal.
The Thibault Liger Belair Estate is a perfect example of the expression of Burgundian terroirs. Covering about fifteen hectares, the estate consists of plots located in some of the most renowned appellations of the Côte de Nuits, such as Nuits-Saint-Georges, Vosne-Romanée, and Clos de Vougeot. The vines benefit from an exceptional climate, and the varied soils - mainly clay-limestone, but also granitic in Beaujolais - allow the production of complex and balanced wines.
One of the particularities of the estate is Thibault's meticulous approach to each plot. As a true wine artisan, he is committed to isolating each terroir to reveal its subtleties. For example, in the Moulin-à-Vent appellation, located in Beaujolais, he has selected plots on the historic hill dominated by the famous windmill. This choice illustrates his ambition to produce wines that are perfectly in tune with their environment, while using biodynamic methods that respect the natural cycles of the soils and vines.
The winemaking process at the Thibault Liger Belair Estate is an example of balance between tradition and innovation. Certified in organic farming since 2005 and practicing biodynamics since 2004, Thibault favours minimal intervention in the cellar. His philosophy is clear: to allow the terroir to express itself fully while preserving the health of the vines.
The grapes are hand-harvested, with rigorous sorting. They are then fermented with a variable proportion of whole bunches, depending on the vintage and the cuvée. The aim is to obtain gentle extractions, without excess tannins, to preserve the elegance and finesse of the aromas. The ageing takes place in carefully selected barrels, with a maximum of 50% new oak, in order not to dominate the fruit. Geothermal energy and solar power, recently integrated into the winery, are a testament to the estate's commitment to sustainable and environmentally friendly winemaking.
The estate produces a wide range of cuvées, each one being a unique expression of its original terroir :
