History of Domaine Pierre Gonon

Located in Mauves, Ardèche, Domaine Pierre Gonon is a family-run estate spanning 10 hectares in the Saint-Joseph AOC. The Gonon brothers, representing the fourth generation, have established this domaine as an essential reference point for Saint-Joseph wines. Their commitment to environmentally friendly viticulture spans generations, with the estate obtaining organic certification in 2011, showcasing their dedication to sustainable farming practices.

Vineyard and Terroir

The domaine's vineyards are nestled in the rugged terroirs of Mauves, characterized by clay-limestone soils ideal for the region's emblematic grape variety, Syrah. The Gonon brothers adopt a meticulous approach to viticulture, prioritizing manual labor and biodiversity conservation. Practices such as grass cover, plowing with winch, and composting are integral to their farming methods, reflecting their dedication to preserving the vineyard ecosystem.

Domaine's Cuvées

Domaine Pierre Gonon offers a range of cuvées that faithfully reflect the richness and diversity of Saint-Joseph's terroirs. Among their flagship cuvées are the Saint-Joseph red and white, as well as special cuvées like "Les Oliviers." The wines produced are known for their power, elegance, and ability to age gracefully. The whites, sourced from old Marsanne and Roussanne vines, offer subtle aromas and a balanced structure, while the reds, dominated by Syrah, express the typicity and complexity of the region's finest wines.

The Northern Rhône Valley

The Northern Rhône Valley, renowned for its elegant and expressive wines, primarily crafted from grape varieties such as Syrah and Viognier, is a diverse and prestigious wine region. Here are some styles of wines from the Northern Rhône by appellation:

Côte Rôtie: Elegant and powerful red wines made predominantly from Syrah, sometimes with a small amount of Viognier.

Condrieu: Elegant and aromatic white wines made from Viognier, showcasing floral and fruity aromas. Notable mention to Château Grillet, an enclave appellation of Condrieu with great prestige.

Saint Joseph: Quality red and white wines, primarily Syrah for reds and Marsanne and Roussanne for whites.

Hermitage: Prestigious red and white wines, with reds based on Syrah and whites from Marsanne and Roussanne.
