Fontaine Gagnard

The wines of the Fontaine-Gagnard estate

Fontaine-Gagnard is an estate created in 1985 by Richard and Laurence Fontaine, situated in the Côte de Beaune (Burgundy) in Chassagne-Montrachet, with a superb 12 ha vineyard. Less publicised than others in the côte de Beaune, most of the vineyard is located in the commune of Chassagne-Montrachet, however with a few plots in the Pommard and Volnay appellations (Pommard 1er Cru "les Rugiens", Volnay 1er Cru "Clos des Chênes"). However, the range of wines from the Fontaine-Gagnard estate is extensive and made up of no less than 22 crus, including 10 white Premiers Crus from Chassagne-Montrachet blanc (La Boudriotte, Les Caillerets, Les Chenevottes, Clos des Murées, Clos St Jean, La Grande Mountain, La Maltroie, Morgeot, La Romanée, Les Orchards). There are also 2 Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Crus in red wine (Clos St Jean and Morgeot). The best is yet to come: no less than 3 Grands Crus with a micro plot (0.08 ha) of the mythical Montrachet, whose roundness and aromatic complexity only grow over time to reveal incredible power. Barely 0.33 ha of Bâtard-Montrachet, and finally another 0.33 ha of Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet, which finds its harmony in its richness and its aromas of ripe yellow fruits, accompanied by an ever-imposing persistence.

It is true that with such a heritage of vines, the Fontaine-Gagnard estate is particularly well endowed. Few wine samples are presented to the French wine press, the discretion of the Fontaine-Gagnard estate is perfectly suited to informed amateurs who prefer to keep their best addresses to themselves, or perhaps only share them with a few knowledgeable wine merchants, oenophiles or the English and American markets. The vinification methods of the Fontaine-Gagnard estate are classic: manual harvesting, aging in oak barrels, 25 to 30% of which are new, fining and light filtration. The whites are bottled after aging for one year and the reds remain in barrel for 14 to 18 months depending on the vintage. The wines of the Fontaine-Gagnard estate are pure and full of finesse without losing any of their generosity or power. It is advisable to wait between 5 and 8 years to consume the whites of the Fontaine-Gagnard estate, and as for the reds, the Pommard 1er Cru Rugiens can improve for 15 years.
