The De Sousa estate quickly grew from 2 to 5 hectares, and Erick de Sousa, who arrived in 1986, expanded the family estate's vineyards and began converting to biodynamic viticulture in 1999, without immediately seeking certification. However, the process was crowned with success in 2010 and 2013 (Agriculture Bio + Demeter certification). The estate's vineyards currently cover almost 10 hectares, in 42 parcels, located in the heart of the Côte des Blancs, on terroirs classified as Champagne Grand Cru such as Avize, Cramant, Oger and Mesnil sur Oger. The De Sousa vineyards, with an average age of almost 50 years, are planted with 60% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir and 10% Pinot Meunier. The new generation of de Sousa's is now taking over at the estate, with Charlotte, Julie and Valentin de Sousa. The range of De Sousa champagnes is made up of different cuvées, including: the Champagne De Sousa Réserve, vinified in vats to respect the aromas of the chardonnay and Grand Cru terroirs. The Réserve is a blend of different years (2 to 3) with at least 25% reserve wine in the blend. The wine is golden in colour, with a persistent string of bubbles. The nose is powerful, expressing great maturity, with notes of flowers, eucalyptus and dried fruit, as well as freshly roasted coffee. Very round on the palate, with hints of honey. Champagne De Sousa cuvée 3A is made from 3 prestigious terroirs classified as Grand Cru (50% Chardonnay from Avize and 50% Pinot Noir, equally divided between the 2 Grands Crus of Avize and Ambonnay). For this cuvée de Champagne de Prestige, 50% of the wine is vinified in egg-shaped barrels and 50% in vats. The nose is of lemon and red fruit, with a delicate edge. The palate is rich, with a superb contrast between a crisp, powerful body and exquisite finesse. The finish is very fresh and persistent, and will delight lovers of this exceptional cuvée. Champagne De Sousa cuvée des Caudalies is a blanc de blancs aged 100% in oak barrels. Every year since 1995, 50% new wines are added to the perpetual reserve. As a result, the number of vintages in the cuvée has increased year on year, and now stands at 22 (1995 to 2017). The colour is pale gold with light, brilliant reflections, and the nose is fine, delicately marked by woody notes that are well integrated and melted, very elegant. The structure of this Champagne is very harmonious, and perfect with fine fish. The Cuvée des Caudalies is also available in a rosé version, with a delicate salmon colour and a delicate bouquet of red berries. De Sousa is a Champagne brand to remember for lovers of champagnes from great terroirs.
