The Renoir estate has been making Champagne for 4 generations, and when Adrien Renoir took over from his father François, he quickly decided to convert the vineyards to organic and biodynamic viticulture, banning the use of weedkillers, and to vinify some of his vintages in wood. Some of the stainless steel vats have been replaced by oak barrels for fermentation. After 11 months of ageing, the wines are bottled for the second fermentation (prise de mousse). The plots of land in the commune of Verzy, one of the 17 villages classified as Champagne Grand Cru, are very well exposed, and the range of Champagnes produced by Domaine Adrien Renoir is of excellent quality. The Champagne Adrien Renoir Le Terroir is an Extra Brut, a blend of 50% Chardonnay and 50% Pinot Noir, also from the Grand Cru terroir of Verzy. On the nose, it develops aromas of white fruit, acacia flowers and honey. On the palate, it is structured and full-bodied, with a chewy, long finish and subtle notes of brioche and toast, where the power of the pinot noir is tempered by the delicate, creamy texture of the chardonnay. The finish is fresh and delicious, with hints of citrus fruit. The Cuvée de Champagne Adrien Renoir Les Montants 2016 is a Blanc de Blancs made from Chardonnay grapes grown on the Grand Cru terroir of Verzy. The chalky soil gives it a lovely minerality, combined with a certain aromatic richness, with notes of tart apples and lemon cream. Full-bodied and complex, this is a fine champagne for the table. Champagne Adrien Renoir Les Epinettes takes its name from a famous plot in Verzy. This 100% Pinot Noir champagne, from the 2016 vintage alone, was vinified and matured in oak barrels. The bubbles are fine and regular, with a powerful, rich nose of fruity aromas and hints of dried fruit (almond, hazelnut and walnut). On the palate, richness and vinosity dominate, followed by freshness and minerality that provide a very fine tension on the mid-palate, concluding with a saline finish. Champagne Adrien Renoir Les Vignes Goisses is a fruity, fresh champagne from one of the few plots of land in Verzy planted with 100% Pinot Meunier in 1962. It's perfect as an aperitif or with the start of a meal. The characteristics of this cuvée: ageing in oak barrels, light dosage, elegance and purity, balance and roundness, in short, a fine piece of work... Champagne Adrien Renoir, an estate to be recommended and which will soon become a benchmark.
