The creation of Champagne Marguet dates back to the 1850s when the Marguet family began their winegrowing venture in Champagne. The estate expanded considerably under the direction of Émile Marguet, a bold pioneer who, in 1883, undertook to graft his vines onto American rootstock in anticipation of phylloxera. Although ahead of his time, this controversial initiative precipitated the sale of part of the vineyards. However, this family heritage endured and evolved successfully.
In the 1970s, Benoît Marguet's parents created Domaine Marguet-Bonnerave and developed the Charles Marguet brand, later renamed Marguet Père et Fils. Benoît, passionate about sustainable viticulture, took the reins of the estate in 2005, integrating modern techniques whilst respecting traditions. Under his leadership, the estate adopted biodynamic practices in 2009, introduced the use of draught horses for ploughing in 2010, and promoted environmentally respectful winemaking philosophy. Today, Marguet embodies a new generation of Champagne winemakers, inspired by a spiritual and geobiological approach, transforming the estate into a model of sustainability and quality.
Champagne Marguet spans 10 hectares of vineyards, mainly located in the Grands Crus of Ambonnay and Bouzy, two emblematic terroirs of the Montagne de Reims. These parcels are rooted in chalk-rich soil, conferring unique minerality to the grapes, and fostering the growth of endemic flora that contributes to the natural balance of the vineyard.
The parcels are maintained according to biodynamic practices, including natural preparations and phytotherapeutic treatments (infusions and decoctions of medicinal plants) and aromatherapeutic treatments (essential oils). Champagne Marguet also ensures the preservation of local biodiversity and ecosystem. The old vines, averaging 42 years of age, bring depth and complexity to the wines produced, reflecting the very essence of the terroir. Soil work is carefully carried out using horses, fostering an intimate connection with the earth and avoiding soil compaction, whilst enhancing vine vitality.
The estate's remarkable lieu-dits, such as Les Crayères, Les Bermonts, La Grande Ruelle, and Le Parc, are cultivated using mass selection, which preserves the genetic diversity of the vine stocks and optimises the expression of each parcel. Through these practices, each terroir expresses a distinct personality in the wines, offering a rich and nuanced aromatic palette.
Benoît Marguet adopts a minimalist approach in the cellar to allow the terroir to fully express itself. All fermentations are carried out in oak barrels with indigenous yeasts, a method that gives the wines unique aromatic complexity. The vinification process respects natural rhythm and aligns with the lunar calendar for steps such as racking, disgorgement, and bottling. Each cru ferments separately in barrels, and the ageing is done extensively on lees, allowing the wines to develop subtle aromas and a silky texture.
The estate favours moving juices by gravity to limit wine stress and preserve their integrity. Sulphur use is reduced to the strict minimum, or even completely avoided in certain cuvées, giving the champagnes exceptional purity and vitality. For Marguet, wood is a living and spiritual material, much more in line with his philosophy than steel, which he considers cold and impersonal. This approach results in vibrant, elegant wines that respect the environment.
